Dispute Resolution Center Administrator

Woodbury College, a progressive adult education institution, is seeking an administrator to oversee general operations of the Dispute Resolution Center (DRC).  This position includes assisting the DRC director, coordinating DRC contracts, coordinating Woodbury College training events, assisting the college Mediation program as needed, and providing information to callers on mediation and facilitation services.  It requires computer literacy, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with a wide range of people.  Mediation & Conflict Management certificate or experience preferred. The Global Security and Cooperation (GSC) program area at the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) promotes the production, integration and dissemination of new knowledge needed to understand and meet the security challenges of the 21st century. The SSRC has a long-standing commitment to developing better understanding of problems of global security and cooperation, ranging from work on arms control and nuclear proliferation to emerging social, political, and religious movements to persistent forms of conflict and threats to human security. The SSRC seeks a dynamic Director to develop and initiate new activities which will launch this program area forward into important innovative areas of research and policy and to manage ongoing projects and the personnel associated with them. Current projects range from work on international relations and nuclear proliferation to social movements and forms of dissent. Many projects include a capacity building component. As with all Council projects, the program director will conceptualize and implement new projects, secure funding, and hire and manage the staff working on these projects collectively with senior staff and members of external committees and research networks.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in one of the social sciences or a closely related field, 7 or more years of relevant experience and demonstrated excellence in their area(s) of research and/or practice. Candidates for this position should also show an intellectual and practical commitment to projects that transcend the boundaries of existing scholarly disciplines and bring together researchers from around the world. Candidates must have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and be capable of presenting social science research findings to non-academic constituencies including donor agencies, multilateral organizations, national policy-makers and civil society and non-governmental practitioners. Qualified candidates will have demonstrated experience in securing funding for large scale research projects and relevant international experience.
The position is based in New York. Salary is negotiable and will be commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications. Review of applications will commence in May 2005 and continue until the position is filled.

Executive Director, Alliance for International Conflict Prevention and Resolution

Dynamic Executive Director (ED) sought to lead all aspects of an active, multifaceted membership organization dedicated to increasing the effectiveness of the conflict prevention and resolution field and maximizing its impact on international peacebuilding. The position is based in the Washington, DC area but requires occasional national and international travel.

The Alliance ED must facilitate both 1) substantive progress of the organization vis-a-vis the larger field of peacebuilding, and 2) networking and collaboration among members, and promotion of members' work. Tasks will include project development, outreach to key constituencies, fundraising and donor relations, facilitation and consensus building both externally and internally, and representation of Alliance members and projects to entities such as the State Department, USAID, DoD, human rights and development organizations, and other governmental, nongovernmental, international financial institutions, and IGO bodies. In addition, the ED will manage the organization, working with a board, the members, and a small staff.

A successful applicant will be: entrepreneurial in creating and growing programs; able to offer a proven record in fundraising conversant with international conflict prevention and resolution (ICPR) methodologies and challenges; an excellent consensus builder in dealing with a diverse membership familiar with key governmental and ICPR players; skilled in organizational and project management; able to build bridges with actors in related fields; proficient at networking in a variety of contexts; and prepared to be an active, passionate voice for the field.

1989 Survey of Burnout Level & Stress Coping Techniques Among University and College Ombudsman
This article presents the results from a survey of burnout in a sample of 79 University and College Ombudsmen that was conducted in 1989, using the standard Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Respondents' scores on MBI subscales suggest that ombudsmen experience lower levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization than other care giving professions (teachers, social service workers, etc.), and enjoy a higher degree of personal accomplishment. Demographic comparisons reveal that male and female ombudsmen have equal burnout levels, but that level of burnout varies with race/ethnicity, education, age, and marital status. Respondents reported a diversity of examples of stress sources in their work life, and revealed a number of activities that help them cope with stress.
